3D-ONCO Platform

Context

Experimental cellular models are a necessary prerequisite for the execution of preclinical studies and contribute to the success of fundamental research.

For this reason, over the past decade, there has been a growing development of 3D in vitro models with architectures and functionalities that more closely resemble those of the tissues from which they are derived. These models, generated from stem or progenitor cells, self‑organize within a suitable environment, notably through the use of supporting matrices and the supply of specific growth and differentiation factors. More recently, and still with the aim of more faithfully mimicking tissue properties, co‑culture approaches combining 3D models with other cell types (immune cells, endothelial cells, normal cells, etc.) have emerged.

The 3D‑ONCO platform, created in 2019 as part of the ERICAN project, aims to make this expertise in 3D models available to both the academic community and industry. Its offering is centered on complex 3D models. The platform’s core activities include the production, characterization, and establishment of biobanks of 3D models, derived from various cancer indications as well as from healthy tissues.

Objectives

The 3D‑ONCO platform offers the scientific community robust, characterized, standardized, ready‑to‑use 3D preclinical models, along with a range of associated services. It also provides the development of protocols to enable the adaptation and increased complexity of existing models. To this end, the platform ensures project management and oversees administrative and experimental interactions with other CRCL platforms:

Our specific strengths

We benefit from access to a wide range of fresh tissue samples thanks to our collaboration with the Centre Léon Bérard (the “fresh tumor pathway”), as well as with the Hospices Civils de Lyon through a partnership with the Department of Pathology.
